The U.S. believes the Russian guided-missile cruiser Moskva, which sank in the northern Black Sea this week, was hit by at least one Ukrainian anti-ship missile, a senior U.S. defense official said, according to the Kyiv government.

The United States said at least one Neptune missile hit the Moscow River, setting the ship on fire. Russia says ship sank in storm and doesn't admit attack
Russia said the ship sank in the storm and did not acknowledge the attack. Moscow is the second large Russian ship destroyed by Ukraine
The Moscow River was hit by at least one or even two Neptune missiles on Wednesday, causing a fire on board, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the intelligence assessment.
The official gave no further details other than to say that the United States believes the Russians caused some casualties on board.
According to military analysts, the Moskva is the largest Russian warship to be damaged by enemy fire since German divers paralyzed the Soviet battleship Marat in the port of Kronstadt in 1941.
The ship is said to be somewhere near the Ukrainian port of Odessa when it exploded in the Black Sea.
Russian officials claimed the damage was caused by a fire on the ship and later claimed it sank when it was towed back to port after it exploded in stormy weather.
"During the tow of the cruiser Moskva to the port of destination, the ship lost its stability due to damage to the hull caused by the explosion of ammunition. The ship sank during the storm," the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Pentagon officials previously said they could not confirm Ukraine's claims, but did not refute them either.
Last month, Ukraine said it also destroyed a Russian landing support ship, the Orsk, in the smaller Sea of Azov.
