The United States believes that Russia's Black Sea flagship was hit by at least one Ukrainian anti-ship missile, a senior U.S. defense official said.
The comments backed up the Kyiv government's claims, which Russian officials disputed, claiming that a fire aboard the missile cruiser caused the onboard munitions to detonate.
Pentagon officials have previously said they could not corroborate Ukraine's claims, but they have not disputed it either.

Discussing the intelligence assessment, the senior U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Moskva River was hit by at least one, possibly two, Neptune missiles on Wednesday, setting the ship on fire.
The official gave no further details other than to say that the United States believes the Russians suffered some casualties on board.
The Moskva River, named after the Russian capital, sank on Thursday as it was dragged into the port after being badly damaged.
The loss of the ship, which had been a strong target for Ukrainian resistance in the early days of the war, was an important victory for Ukraine and a symbolic defeat for Russia.

The sinking, which crippled Russia's firepower in the Black Sea, appeared to symbolize Moscow's fate in an eight-week invasion that was widely seen as a historic mistake by Russia's withdrawal from the Kyiv region and much of northern Ukraine.
Police said on Friday that the bodies of more than 900 civilians, most of whom had been shot dead, were found after the withdrawal of troops in areas around the Ukrainian capital.
"Russia's 'flagship' is a site worth diving," Ukraine's Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov tweeted on Friday.
"We now have another dive site in the Black Sea.
"We will definitely visit the wreck after we win the war."
