NASCAR stars show solidarity with African-American driver Bubba Wallace after noose was left in his garage.

NASCAR stars came together to support Bubba Wallace after a noose was left in the African-American driver’s garage stall last weekend.

The sickening discovery was made at the Talladega circuit in Alabama ahead of Sunday’s race which later had to be postponed due to stormy weather.

The FBI have confirmed that they will be launching an investigation into the incident which comes against the backdrop of the Black Lives Matter campaign which erupted across the world following the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.

On Monday night – one day after the noose’s discovery – Wallace uploaded a selfie to his Twitter profile with the caption ‘Together’ and the 26-year-old also posted an accompanying video on his Instagram page which showed him surrounded by his NASCAR colleagues and rivals at the circuit.

There were emotional scenes as all 39 of Wallace’s fellow drivers and pit crew members walked in solidarity, escorting him and his number 43 Chevrolet Camarot to the front of the pit road.

Wallace sobbed as he made his way out of the car when it came to a stop before NASCAR Hall of Fame team owner Richard Petty put a hand on his shoulder and shared a few private words.

Sunday’s incident came after Wallace successfully campaigned for NASCAR to ban the Confederate flag at his home Alabama track.

A number of fans have voiced their anger with the ruling and a group of supporters drove past the track with Confederate flags in protest ahead of the race.

There was also a flyover from a plane which read ‘Defund NASCAR’ in the wake of Wallace’s campaign.

NASCAR President Steve Phelps stressed that there was ‘no room’ for racism in the sport and vowed to issue lifetime bans to those involved.

‘Unequivocally they will be banned from this sport for life,’ Phelps said.

‘There is no room for this at all. We won’t tolerate it.

‘They won’t be here. I don’t care who they are, they will not be here.’

Wallace says the discovery of the noose in his garage stall ‘serves as a painful reminder’ of just how far society has to go in the battle against racism.

‘The despicable act of racism and hatred leaves me incredibly saddened,’ he said.

‘It serves as a painful reminder of how much further we have to go as a society and how persistent we must be in the fight against racism.

‘As my mother told me today, “They are just trying to scare you”.

‘This will not break me, I will not give in nor will I back down. I will continue to proudly stand for what I believe in.’
