In this video, I’d like to talk about whether iPadOS 14 makes the iPad a better laptop replacement. And what I think is coming next to the Apple ecosystem.

So what’s changed in iPadOS 14? To be honest, it’s a bit of disappointment for iPad users.

We can’t move widgets out of the Today View.

We don’t get the app library that the iPhone gets on iOS 14.

There are no new features for the mouse or trackpad.

And features that so many of us have been asking for, like screen scalability on external display didn’t make it into this release.
Instead, we still have the black bars on either side of the display and the iPad is still limited to only mirroring what’s on the display instead of extended the desktop like on the Mac.

Apple did add cool features like Scribble. Which is truly an awesome experience to use.

And they are focusing on making the apps look more Mac-like with the addition of menus that look a lot like macOS.

They made a big deal about adding sidebars to apps such a Music and Files. But I don’t really see why this was worth mentioning.

So far I’ve only found these magical sidebars in Music and Files. Mail already had a sidebar and the App Store, Podcasts and Apple Store apps just don’t need it, so what’ the big deal here?

My guess is that this year, all the attention went into improving the iPhone and Mac. Which is amazing news because the Mac has been neglected for so many years.

It also feels like Apple has finally cracked their strategy of how they want all of these devices to work together.

And that’s why they made these big changes to the user interface of macOS.

The new-look interface looks like they are preparing to make touch screen Macs. I would say that this is no inevitable.

And that’s really bad news for the iPad.

What happens in the future when the Macs come in a radically new form factor and work with the Pencil and has a touch screen? What do we need iPads in that future?
Worse yet, why would developers spend time making iPad apps if they could just make versatile Mac apps that allow any kind of input?

Does this mean the iPad will stagnate?

Or does this mean the iPad is going to become more powerful and versatile?

Is the iPad going to become the most versatile Mac before macOS gets touch screen enabled hardware?

And will iPadOS 15 be the release where windowed apps and full-screen external display support finally comes to the iPad?

I hope so because the momentum we felt with the addition of mouse support and the surprise release of the Magic Keyboard feels like it’s lost now and that energy has been transferred to the Mac overnight.

Let me know what you think in the comments below.
